RICHLAND, Wash. (January 27, 2026) – Gesa Credit Union has been recognized as the #1 Small Business Administration (SBA) credit union lender in Washington for the third year in a row, and ranked among the top credit unions nationally for SBA lending, part of a broader pattern of lending growth that positions the credit union as a leading financial partner for Pacific Northwest businesses and families.
In 2023, Gesa approved more than $29 million in small loan amounts, and in 2024, it signed off on more than $32 million. Last year, it approved more than $22 million in small business loans, resulting in the creation of 29 new jobs and the retention of an additional 250 jobs.
The SBA recognition comes as Gesa posted the fastest commercial lending growth and second-fastest residential lending growth among Washington credit unions, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2025-2026 Book of Lists released last month. The rankings, compiled using National Credit Union Association (NCUA) data from previous years, measured year-over-year dollar value growth across nearly 80 credit unions headquartered in Washington. Notable data includes:
- Between September 2023 and September 2024, Gesa’s commercial lending portfolio grew from $745.01 million to $899.88 million—a 20.79% increase that outpaced 39 credit unions posting positive growth during that period.
- Residential lending expanded from $1.31 billion to $1.45 billion, up 10.26% between March 2024 and March 2025, ranking second among 43 credit unions with positive growth.
“Our growth reflects the strong relationships and trust businesses place in Gesa, and the strong collaboration our commercial and residential lending teams have in one another,” said Ben Rutledge, SVP of Commercial Banking, Gesa Credit Union.
The SBA lending recognition places Gesa among a select group of credit unions nationwide that have built specialized expertise in government-backed small business financing. As a Preferred Lender Program (PLP) partner with the SBA, Gesa has earned the authority to expedite loan approvals through streamlined processing—a distinction that reflects both proven expertise in navigating complex federal requirements and a commitment to maintaining the speed and service small businesses demand.
Steve Tagnolli, Gesa VP of Home Loans, pointed to similar commitment on the residential side. “We’ve built these lending relationships by understanding what our communities need, whether that’s helping a small business expand operations or helping a family purchase their first home.”
Gesa serves more than 312,000 members across 45 branches in Washington and Idaho. The credit union’s commercial lending team works with businesses ranging from family-owned operations to established regional companies, while residential lending supports homebuyers throughout the Pacific Northwest.
